I have installed and tried to adjust pavucontrol, but it doesn't seem to see
the sound card correctly.

Missing drivers? Which??

Very little sleep last night is probably not helping. But my husband wanted
this emergency computer fast so that he could keep up with his courses - and
for that he wants sound. :-(

From command line, enter alsamixer. It should pop up and you are looking for muted channels. Hit F6 to chose the Intel device and you'll see vertical volume bars. Each setting bar should display 00 just below each bar. If you see mm then that channel is muted and you want to hit the m key to un-mute it. I know ...primitive.

If you would rather use a nice gui then enter (as root user) apt-get install alsamixergui. I love pulse audio, but it sits on top of alsa, so if alsa if broken, pulse won't stand a chance. So, I'm betting 50 cents that says fixing the alsa settings will enable sound for you. Ric
