I finally (today indeed) took the plunge & switched to testing - this
brought in Linux 4.3 - full/better support for Intel Skylake chips - and
lo and behold! it lives!
If/As I come upon any further issues, I'll follow up, but as of now I'm
so pleased to get rid of the USB sound card & little external speaker
that I haven't even started sparring with nvidia!
