This is pretty weird. For a first try at understanding it:

 - could you enter into this "terminal" you mention above the
   command

     echo $PATH

   What does it output?

 - could you describe your setup a bit more? What version of Debian?
   How/when installed? Has apt-get worked before for you (in this
   installation)?

 - Perhaps you could go to your terminal and enter the following:

     set > /tmp/envi

   Then open the file /tmp/env in your favorite text editor, look
   CAREFULLY through it and delete whatever lines which might contain
   personal data or passwords (THIS IS IMPORTANT!), then post the
   rest here.

Given your description it is pretty clear what is happening, but I'm
at a loss about how you system arrives there.
