The installer will install NetworkManager under most
circumstances.
You can change over to using /etc/network/interfaces by writing
your configuration there, removing NetworkManager, and
rebooting.
In theory NetworkManager ignores any interfaces defined in
/etc/network/interfaces. In practice, it is a bad idea to have
NetworkManager installed if you never use it.
wicd does a much better job at integrating with
/etc/network/interfaces, but you probably only want it on a
laptop, or similar machine which moves between wireless networks
frequently.
