There is no official (maybe what you mean by "canonical") repository of Debian that contains the latest version of Emacs. The main repository obviously doesn't have it, and the Backports don't have it either: <https://packages.debian.org/search?suite=jessie-backports&searchon=names&keywords=emacs>.
Compiling Emacs is not difficult anyway.
