I changed the subject line to make "S205" more prominent; over the years I
have spent hours with Google searching for reports on Debian with that
specific machine.
I saw on https://www.debian.org/ an announcment regarding Debian 8.2, so I
re-installed, hoping that 8.2 or something in the installer might have
fixed the power-down issue. But the machine still cannot be powered down
from Xfce or by opening a terminal and executing "shutdown -h now" from
the command line; it is necessary to hold down the hardware switch.
The use of approx speeds reinstallation.
