Henrique, your advice is much appreciated. I have come to understand
that the distribution kernels differ from Linus' kernels and it is wise
to stick with the former.

The laptop I'm using is running Debian Sid. There are two kernels
available for it, and the one I'm currently using is the
4.0.0-2-amd64. It has the i915 with the bug. But also installed is a
3.16.0-4-amd64.

Off hand, the 3.16.0-4-amd64 kernel does not have the bug. That is, the
system responds to the # shutdown command.
