and it's there i learned how to construct my printcap file.

however it has nothing about making the printer available to the apps.

i searched the web again, and discovered there are things like kprinter which will work.

now to figure out which of them will actually work.

kprint(er) is out because i don't want to install all of kde to get it.

regardless i'm on the write track.

the really interesting tidbit.  libre prints to something called the "default printer".  now that i have a default printer, it works just fine ...
