So the answer to my question is that you installed with root, so a root GUI
will be disabled by default. You will have to enable it. It is now, I
believe, possible to install without root, when sudo will behave however sudo
behaves, presumably including a root GUI.
Presumably a GUI specifically for sudo counts as a root GUI? I don't quite
see how a sudo GUI session works, but then I rarely use sudo, and when I do I
use it at the CLI.
I repeat myself:
in Debian a root GUI is disabled by default.
