Actually, there's [quite a bit more][1] to it than that. The primary
motivation behind Iceweasel is actually security patches, rather than
privacy/freedom concerns. Due to the release schedule of Debian, the
plan was to freeze on one version of Firefox, and backport security
fixes to that during the life of Stable (just like every other package
works). However, Mozilla decreed that such a modification would create a
derivative version of Firefox and that this was not allowed.

So, the options left available to the Debian Developers were to freeze Firefox
into stable and NOT fix security problems (which is clearly not a nice
thing to do to users), to provide regular updates of Firefox to stable
users (which goes against the philosophy of Stable), or to comply with
Mozilla's wishes to de-brand the patched Firefox. Thus IceWeasel was
born.
