This may be unnecessary. GCC and the kernel-package are only needed if
you have to compile the driver module yourself, but you may find that it
works with the standard kernel, anyway.

I haven't used usb-modeswitch myself, but what happens when you execute
"usb_modeswitch"? Do you get any errors, or any additional logs in
syslog?
