A dead end. As Liam wrote the usual answer is to use the 'equivs' package to create a dummy package to hold the dependency for anything that is compiled and installed locally. Alternatively create a full replacement package. Starting from the Debian package and modifying it isn't usually very difficult. But if you just want to cut it loose and do the upstream thing directly through 'make install' then creating an equivs package is the way to go. Bob
