gdm is the Gnome Display Manager. This is the screen where you can choose the user and enter your password. This application is also responsible for the lockscreen, suspend and so on. KDE has is own display manager (KDM) so I think when you installed KDE KDM has messed up something. just to be sure: apt-get update apt-get purge kdm apt-get install --reinstall gdm3 dpkg-reconfigure gdm3 success, floris
