Probably because it depends on how you want to interface with it. One fairly easy method (interactive interface, doesn't depend on a graphical desktop) is alsamixer. At a command prompt, run "alsamixer" and you'll get a page with sliders. Use left and right to switch between sliders. Press "m" to toggle muted (MM in the box below the slider means muted, OO means unmuted). You may also want to use the up and down keys to adjust the volume of the slider to a suitable level. When you're done, press F6 to check for other soundcards (I think it's normal for ALSA and Pulseaudio to present different soundcards.
