This issue got solved itself when I upgraded the system to Jessie completely.

rajulocal@hogwarts:~$ dpkg -l iceweasel chromium
ii  chromium       33.0.1750.15 amd64        Chromium web browser
ii  iceweasel      24.4.0esr-1  amd64        Web browser based on Firefox

Thanks Kumar.
