You probably ran
# aptitude upgrade
too.  That doesn't remove anything.
# aptitude full-upgrade
would have accomplished what you wanted.


no, aptitude full-upgrade wanted to remove half of Mate.The sticking point was the new applets file which only synaptic offered to upgrade.
