Jessie: plymouth crashes - diagnostic advice?

We have a Jessie install on 32 bit intel where plymouth crashes in at least two separate ways:

1. As X is started the screen goes blank and the computer appears crashed - a restart is required. Interestingly, if ESC is pushed while in splash screen - usual approach to review boot messages in plymouth, then X starts normally

2. Without plymouth-drm installed (just the base plymouth package) and with the default text splash operating, plymouth appears to crash on start ca 80 percent of the time.

This same configuration works in wheezy on the same hardware.

Does any one have advice for how these problems can be diagnosed?

Thanks in advance,
--Ben
