Typical; further searching, and I find an answer that, so far, seems to

Do (as root)
# apt-get clean
# rm /var/lib/apt/lists/*
# rm /var/lib/apt/lists/partial/*
# apt-get clean
# apt-get update
No idea why there's two apt-get clean lines, but hey...
