A long time ago I run a 64-bit architecture Debian with a 32-bit chroot, nowadays Debian does support multiarch https://wiki.debian.org/Multiarch , my "main" distro is a 64-bit Arch Linux install and my Debian on the same machine is a 32-bit install, so I can't help you.
