Correct /etc/network/interfaces would be (notice that 'allow-hotplug'
is above 'iface eth0'):

After editing it, invoke:
ifdown eth0
pkill -9 -f dhclient

If you can still check you mail, courier-imapd wasn't needed.
Now, those CPU spikes - I don't know. Try running strace on icedove if
it happens again.
