I know nothing about mate other than it's not debian.  You will want to
add debian security updates to your sources.list for sure regardless
whether or not you use non-debian repos for additional apps:

deb http://security.debian.org/ wheezy/updates main non-free contrib

My setup is an xfce desktop.  Here's my sources.list from my local
mirror at MIT:

~$ grep -v "#" /etc/apt/sources.list

deb http://security.debian.org/ wheezy/updates main non-free contrib

deb http://debian.lcs.mit.edu/debian/ wheezy main non-free contrib

deb http://debian.lcs.mit.edu/debian/ wheezy-updates main non-free contrib

Run apt-get update after making any changes to your sources.list.
