Maybe my example was not clear:
the objective was to add a group, not to change the group ownership.

cf 
-R, --root CHROOT_DIR
           Apply changes in the CHROOT_DIR directory and use the
           configuration files from the CHROOT_DIR directory.

So i'm guessing this only applies when u have chrooted "OS's" within
your OS?
