I do not think it's a problem with the keyboard, because it responds. In
fact, I can enter the passphrase, but after that, I have no confirmation
that it has been accepted or rejected. If I then keep pressing the
keyboard, it responds, but the operating system never initiates the
bootstrapping.

Could you start an encrypted Debian with Linux 3.10 from Backports?

Try testing in a virtual machine and if I fix it I'll use the same
process on the notebook.

I wanted to upgrade to Linux 3.10 thinking that might be a problem with
the drivers for the notebook wlan interface.
