I do not know mint but with debian wheezy it is easy to turn off/on IPv6 on the fly:

/etc/sysctl.d/ipv6.conf --------------------------------------------------------

# Disable IPv6
net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6=1
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------/

then you need to activate those settings with:
# sysctl -p /etc/sysctl.d/*.conf
