Yes, I've set the "A" and the "MX" record to the same FQDN, and that is
also the HELO string. (at least now that I adjusted the entry in the
hosts file.)

On the assumption that you're not running your own public DNS server, then you will need an A record with your domain host. It's easiest if you use the same A record your MX points to, though it's not necessary. Not all mail servers will require their senders to have a resolvable HELO, but many will, including my exim4. It's disabled by default, I think, but it's a useful spam reduction technique. Oddly, some of the pickiest servers now seem to be Exchange installations.
