I can adjust it via the /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0 interface.

Right, sorry. I hope the above aditional info will help narrow things
down. I don't use any power manager (gnome-power-manager or the like).
Also, the video card on this machine is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3200
which I'm using with the proprietary fgrx driver.
