That is correct -- regardless of the filesystem -- NTFS, ext2, or
reiserfs -- I get the same message I originally posted. I was able to
use all these devices in Kubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron), which I used before
updating to Wheezy; I can still get to the NTFS thumb drive via my
Windows virtual machine.

I've used Linux for 12 years now; I recently returned to the Debian
fold after seven years of using Kubuntu (the seven-year itch?).
