kde menu missing back arrow widget

  Debian GNU/Linux testing (wheezy) 
  kernel 3.2.0-2-686-pae
  KDE 4.7.4 

  Opening the kde menus from the K application launcher
  is missing the back arrow widget under wheezy 
  on this machine .... 

  It was present and functional 
  but at some point vanished .... 

  Now if I enter a sub-menu I can't simply
  go back but have to leave the menu 
  and re-enter just to get to a previous level .... 

  No problem on the same machine
  using kde under squeeze ....
