I placed all these in modules in addition to a few others I had tried because
of previous error messages. A dep update-initramfs still produces the
complaint about
 :/ Is a directory
but at least the one I tried booted! 1/3 the size.

The first work-around I tried was a phony symlink rootfs->/ which can be on my
home directory where I am logged in. This is what produces the complaint but
enables an initrd-img to be produced.

/proc/mounts certainly does have a rootfs on / so this certainly is a bug and
nothing to do with the original knoppix (though I have not tried it on a
"pure" chroot produced be debootstrap--my system will not accept a dep-based
bootup sequence and that certainly could be related).
