VLC alone didn't work for me, I don't remember if I tried ogv but MP4s
didn't play for sure. What phonon-backend are you using, if any? What
package are w32codecs in?

w32/64codecs si from deb(ian)-multimedia, but it's not necessary.
This is what I have installed, everything is from Debian proper (contrib
and non-free included), and I can't remember the last time I couldn't
play an audio or video file... Many packages are superfluous and only
necessary for specific use.

I install libdvdcss2 separately for commercial encrypted dvd's.
If your file is rigged with drm's then you might have a hard time
reading it on Debian (or any Linux), no matter what player/codec you use.
