I know that sox can adjust the volume of a sound file and I have

:~$ sox -v 0.1 Kedushah.m4a Kedushah.mp3
sox FAIL formats: can't open output file `Kedushah.mp3': SoX was
compiled without MP3 encoding support

Xine, also, will not read it. Only mplayer will play the file.

Is there any way to adjust the volume? Can mplayer be told to
adjust the volume of a file that it is playing? I have looked
through the man file and used -list-options, but if it is there then
missed it.

You can look at 'aacgain' and a frontend for it 'easymp3gain-gtk'

Thanks to everyone who has commented on this. Using aacgain I was able to adjust the volume of the mp3s that I have as well as the m4a file. The mp3s, in this case, were unusually low in volume and the problem was that either we could not hear the mp3s, or the m4a blasted our ears. I decided to adjust the volume up on the mp3s but had to be careful not to run into clipping problems. It is good to have something that will handle the m4a, although I may eventually just convert it to mp3. (It is the only m4a file that I have.) As Bob said, I could output to .wav with the volume adjusted and then convert to mp3 with lame. For now, though, everything is good. Thanks again, everybody.
