I had some off-list conversations with the helpful Bob Proulx and just wanted to confirm
in the thread that this was the cause of the problems. So if you get this error
or an error that a hard drive could not be found make sure your
netboot image and the udebs you download from your debian mirror are both from the
same release version.

My preseed system is working great again. Preseed is awesome, great job d-i team.
