I've subscribed to LAU now, thanks for the link.
If I disable the onboard device the M-Audio card is selected OK
But this with all the cards enabled is new, and appeared with updates.
I suspect pulseaudio is involved, but now pulse is dependent on gnome, so uninstalling pulseaudio
has dependency problems.
The problem is Ralf the wanted card is the M-Audio D-66 shown as device 0 and as soon as another sound
card is installed, it goes to the default or pulse.
As others have stated audio in Debian is a mess, the trouble is the other distros are not far behind.
ALSO I've found that there are so many lists in Debian, that the excuse this should go to another list
is used too often.
If you really want to see the mess audio is in, I'll paste in everything that comes up when I start an
application.:-
