I got a private response to this by someone running Iceweasel who said
they had no problem with that site...

I should be able to run both firefox and iceweasel right? So I thought
I might do some testing with Iceweasel.

I am having an issue where firefox 7.0.1 makes Xorg pull an ungodly
amount of resource on one particular web page.... so I thought I'd
install iceweasel and see if that would help me see if it is a local
problem or what. But now, when I try to start iceweasel, I get a
warning dialog that tells me

iceweasel is already running, but not responding and that I must
first close that instance in order to start iceweasel.

However,
   ps wwaux|grep icew
shows no pid for iceweasel... how can it be running with no pid.
Or does icew do something sneaky with the firefox program?

I did see a message when I just now installed iceweasel:

[snipped from installe output]

  [...]
  Unpacking iceweasel (from .../iceweasel_7.0.1-4_i386.deb) ...
Adding 'diversion of /usr/bin/firefox to /usr/bin/firefox.real by
iceweasel' Processing triggers for man-db ...
  [...]

I do see several pids for firefox (wrapped for mail):

  reader 12600 0.0 0.0 1892 500 ? S 14:52 \
         0:00 sh -c /usr/bin/firefox

  reader 12601 1.9 6.2 570888 129260 ? Sl \
         14:52 6:54 /usr/bin/firefox

  reader 12927 0.1 0.9 127424 19716 ? Sl \
         15:01 0:31 /usr/lib/firefox/plugin-container \
       /home/reader/.mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so -greomni \
       /usr/lib/firefox/omni.jar 12601 true plugin

Is one of those likely to be iceweasel impersonating firefox?

Anyway, can anyone guess what might be going on here?
