If there is such driver I'd say it should be included within any of the
Xorg packages so I would check first if the device is already supported
directly by the X server.

If you're running Squeeze (stable) I guess there would be no kernel
upgrades that break your modules. If you are running Wheezy (testing)
then yes, there's a high chance that you will have to recompile the
module on every kernel change.
