Screwed up gnome-shell~ pretty please help
Hi All
I was trying to get the radeon driver for the onboard ATI HD graphics card.
I copied the xorg.conf to xorg.conf.nvidia, as the pci slot has a nvidia graphics card in it.
I purged all ati and radeon files and ran the ati-driver-installer 11.11
That ran OK, but no displayed and no mouse or keyboard.
From recovery mode I ran aticonfig --initial, which allowed the xserver to start, but just a blank
screen.
nothing else. I tried another purge of everything radeon or ati and reran the proprietary ATI installer
again,
still the same.
I have and install at a friends tommorow with the same mobo and the same ati card, so would be nice to
get gnome-shell running properly.
I've given up for the moment unless I can get some help and gone back to my nvidia card, restored the
old xorg.conf, but in normal gnome shell mode I just get the Debian screen and nothing on the top .
all mouse buttons do nothing, only ctl-alt-del allows me to log out and run gnome in fall back( classic)
mode.
any ideas on a fix for the current problem with nvidia card ????
and has anyone successfully got an ATI driver running with a Radeon HD4250, that they would like to
share how the hell they got it running. PLEASE
I'm gonna get enough grief installing debian on this guys computer tommorow, and if I could get a smooth
install of a driver that would allow gnome to run in standard mode,with the onboard ATI graphics card, it
would be one less thing to stop him winging that some thing isn't working like windows.
It normally only lasts a few weeks before he gives up and goes 100% to micro rubbish systems
