Edison started the research into meters and AC, but I can't remember who 
joined in/followed on.

But the word meter came from a citizen of the USA, and the word came from the 
States.  I was not claiming, and do not believe, that electricity was 
discovered in the States.  But it was commercialised there.  
(Non-commercialised electricity doesn't need a meter, however it is spelt!)
