Uff, have you tried with another IDE cable? Those seem hardware errors.

There are not unsupported IDE optical devices. There can be problems with 
the firmware with some of these units (I remember about LG devices that 
came with the "bluebirds" utility embedded on it that caused problems in 
linux systems) but as per the above errors I would think it's a kind of 
hardware related issue (either change the IDE cable with a new one and/or 
remove the optical unit to use it with an external enclosure to connect 
it via USB port. A failure in the IDE port of the board is also a 
possibility besides a problem with the unit itself).
