Hi,
I haven't used asymptote so I can't compare it to tikz but I do like
tikz quite a lot - I wouldn't claim having mastered it but I'm
satisfactory fluent in it and it has served me well for all my papers
and slides so far.
Some points I like specifically about tikz (but asymptote may have it as
well or even better - I just don't know asymptote):
1) The tikz documentation is quite good and there are loads of examples
on the internet.
2) It integrates very well with the beamer class I use to produce my
slides. This allows me to reuse code for graphics I produced for a
paper in slides for a talk, adopt it where necessary, ...
3) Whenever tikz forced me to do it the tikz way instead of my way, I
ended up with a (in a pedagogical sense) better graphic than I
originally wanted. :-)
Cheers, Simon
