Squeeze 2.6.37.4 vs squeeze-backports vs kernel compiling [was IVTV Patch]

Hi again

I found three choices to get my PVR-500 to work properly on Squeeze (2.6.32-5-amd64):

The first option would be installing at least 2.6.37-4-amd64. This kernel should be a stable release where the ivtv patch is applied (Commit 0ab29c52f9efdd645d565f8be3915183819a6c3e). I found this http://ask.debian.net/questions/how-to-update-kernel-and-x-on-squeeze
The first answer says that I can install "kernel-package" and then
# make-kpkg 2.6.37-4
or something like this?

In the same thread benh answered three months ago "I just uploaded Linux 2.6.37 to unstable, so it should be available in testing and squeeze-backports soon." I found the http://backports.debian.org/Instructions/ page and added "deb http://backports.debian.org/debian-backports squeeze-backports main" to my /etc/apt/sources.list.
Now I can install e.g. "linux-image-2.6.38-bpo.2-amd64".
It seems that this is exactly what I need (http://packages.debian.org/squeeze-backports/linux-image-2.6.38-bpo.2-amd64).
Is this a stable kernel version too?

The third option would be to adapt the needed changes to the ivtv-irq.c source code file in my old kernel version (2.6.32). Then compile the kernel and modules and install the ivtv driver module. Since I have neither touched the kernel nor compiled it I doubt that I will be able to do this in the next few months :-(

Thanks for any advice and help.

Best regards
Ramon
