Then forget about the "driver conflict" I suggested because both 
("rt2800*" and "rt2x00*") seem to be linked in any way and they are 
loaded automatically.

Well, I would start looking at the log ("/var/log/syslog") for any 
suspicious entries and also "dmesg", just in case...

Also, recheck the settings you provided for the wireless card. What tool 
did you use (manual setup, NetworkManager, wicd, wpa_supplicant...)?

But as you cannot even scan for any AP at the 5GHz. band, it sounds to me 
more like a hardware/driver issue than a simple bad card configuration
