maybe you looked within X and using a command like su -, sux, sudo or similar?
When I am using sux, then a new entry is created in /etc/shadow, which
disappears after closing the console.
You can check it, if this entry is existent in a real shell (tty 1-6). Login
as root, then examine again using vi. The entry should not be listed again.
