If you're able to open the laptop and get to the disk easily - usually via small cover on the bottom -
check that the disk is firmly connected to the connector / cable.

ELSE

Very dead disk, by the sounds of it. If the sound you're hearing is like  a "tick tick tick" - it's usually
the results of a disk having hit the floor or something similar: the reader on the disk heads continually
tries to get to a position and fails, returns, tries again ...

If the machine will boot from a USB stick - try using the Squeeze installer on a USB - that will also eliminate
any problem with the CD drive itself
