Not it's not (over your head).. :-)
$ bind '"\C-t": "Hello world"'
Then when you type Ctrl-T you get:
$ Hello World
Hence:
$ bind '"\C-t": "xterm^M"'
.. and press Ctrl-T you start a new xterm - try it.
Notes:
1. to enter the ^M in the above bind command, you need to type CTRL-V
and then hit the Enter key.
2. once you get add a binding to work you may want to add it to
~/.xinitrc
3. it may be more user-friendly to use your window manager or desktop's
capabilities to create such custom bindings.
