It is sid (I failed to mention that, I guess). Your direction worked perfectly. Changed that sysctl to 0, ran sysctl and it started right up. Thank you for that! I have been fiddling with this for a couple of months now...

Debian testing/sid? IIRC, there is a known bug for this:

java-common: Package updates entail "Network is unreachable" in Java programs
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=560142#35

The trick was disabling ipv6 for java.
