The first thought that comes to my mind (without looking at your log
because I am pressed for time so I may be completely off-base...) is
to compare the lmcompatibilitylevel setting of the XP and Vista boxes
in
hklm\system\currentcontrolset\control\lsa
(I think! It might be in hklm\software\...)

Or, you could add
client ntlmv2 auth = yes
to
smb.conf
to allow Vista to use v2
