Hmm.  Perhaps you're right.  I just noticed the following line in his
/var/log/Xorg.0.log file:

(--) PCI:*(1:5:0) ATI Technologies Inc unknown chipset (0x9616) rev 0, Mem @ 0xd0000000/28, 0xfbef0000/16, 0xfbd00000/20, I/O @ 0xd000/8

"Unknown chipset".  That's not a good sign.
