If you have access phisically to the computer, try by running "ifdown 
eth0" and then retry. Careful to issue that command if you are remotely 
connected :-)

Beyond that, restarting the machine could also help (in the event the 
problem is caused by lazy udev network rules not being properly 
populated...).
