As the usb-modem is new, i suppose that the product-id is not in the kernel. therefore the stick is noch recognized.
you could - even if chances are rather small - try to modify the kernel-source to get the device directly recognized if there is a similar device, whose driver can be used.

maybe that'll help. i have no experience with usbserial.
