What do you mean by "etc"? If you only want a 64 bit kernel then go 
ahead and install it:

# aptitude install linux-image-2.6.26-2-amd64

If you want to switch all your programs to 64 bit (the amd64 Debian 
architecture) the safest and easiest way is to reinstall.
